The vertical part. Five decisions, and why each one makes it more useful than the standard you probably already own.
Second in the series taking each part of the Desh– system apart. The Hangtrack came first because it decides what everything else is allowed to do. The Standard is next because it is installed next.
The architecture is not unusual. A track goes on the wall, standards hook onto it, brackets go into the standards, shelves go onto the brackets. Anyone who has planned a wire-shelving system has met it. Because the architecture is vernacular, everything distinctive about a Desh Home standard has to happen inside the part itself.
Five things happen inside this one.
1. It steps over the track, so it lies flat on the wall
A hanging standard has to overlap the hang track. There are only two ways to do that.
The common way is to let the standard sit on top of the track. It works, it is simple to make, but it keeps the standard from lying flat against the wall. Everything downstream inherits it: the brackets sit forward, the shelves sit forward, and there is a small gap running the full height of the installation with a shadow in it.
The Desh– Standard is relieved where it crosses the Hangtrack — a step formed into the profile, so the rail is taken up inside the part rather than passed underneath it. The back face of the Standard stays flat to the wall. No gap, no shadow line. It's a small detail.
That is the difference most people notice first and describe last. It reads as tidy long before anyone works out why.
2. It arrives as two halves, and neither one is an offcut
The Standard is 85 in. It ships as two 42.5 in halves.
The first reason is freight. An 85 in part is an oversized item to every carrier that handles it. Two 42.5 in halves go in a parcel. That is less money to move and materially less opportunity for the part to be damaged on the way, and both of those show up in what you pay.
The second reason is the better one.
Take any one-piece standard and cut it in half. The top half still has the hook, so it is still a standard. The bottom half has nothing to hang from and is scrap. You bought one part and you have one part.
Both Desh– halves are the same part. Each one carries its own hook, and each can hang off a Hangtrack on its own. So a box contains two working standards, not one standard in two pieces. That is the difference between an 85 in column and two 42.5 in columns. A short run over a bath, under a window, above a desk, in a cupboard, all from the same purchase.
It also means the shorter installation is not a compromised version of the taller one. It is the same part, doing the job it was drawn to do.
3. It has screw holes, so the Hangtrack is optional
The Standard can be screwed directly to the wall.
Plenty of hanging standards cannot. They are hooked parts and nothing else, which means the track is not a convenience, it is a prerequisite — the only load path the part has. If you want one short column in a utility room, you are buying and drilling a track for it anyway.
Two things follow from having holes.
You can skip the track. Where the run is short, where the studs are where you want the standards to be, and where you are not planning to move anything sideways later, screw the Standard to the wall and be done. Fewer parts, less money, one less thing on the wall.
You can use both. Hang the Standard on the Hangtrack, position it where you want it, then put screws through it as well. The track has already done the job it is good at — it let you place the column anywhere along the wall without measuring — and the screws now do the job they are good at, which is holding that column exactly there under load, in both directions, permanently.
Those are usually presented as an either/or. They are not. Adjustability is what you need while you are deciding; fixity is what you want once you have decided. The holes let you have the second one without giving up the first.
4. It couples, so 85 in is not the ceiling
Every box contains two halves and one coupler with two screws. That is how you get back to a full-height 85 in Standard when you want one, and it is in the box whether you use it or not.
The same coupler is what stops 85 in from being a limit. Add another half, add another coupler, and the column keeps going. There is no mechanism in the part that says stop.
We would rather be honest about that than boast about it. Everything you couple on below hangs, ultimately, off whatever is holding the top of the column, and everything you load onto it is carried by the same hook. A column twice as long with shelves down its whole length is not twice the demand on that hook.
So the guidance is the boring kind: extend the Standard as far as the installation genuinely needs, keep the heavy shelves high and near the fixings rather than hung out at the bottom of a long run, and if the column is getting tall, give it a second Hangtrack. Which is the next section, and is the actual answer.
5. Two hooks means two Hangtracks
This is the one that is hard to do any other way.
Because both halves are identical, both halves have a hook. Couple them into a full-height column and you have not lost the lower hook — it is still there, partway down, doing nothing.
Put a second Hangtrack where it lands.
Now the installation hangs from two rails at two heights instead of one rail at the top. The shelves in the lower half load into studs near the lower half, rather than travelling all the way up the column to the top track.
A single-hook standard cannot do this at any price. It has one point of attachment by construction, so every shelf on it — top, middle, bottom — is ultimately carried by that one hook and the studs behind that one track. Adding a second track underneath does nothing, because there is nothing on the standard for it to hold.
This is also why sections 2 and 5 are the same decision seen twice. Making the halves identical so that neither is scrap is what put a second hook on the column, and the second hook is what lets the load be divided. One choice, two payoffs.
What this costs
None of this is free.
The coupler is a joint, and no joint is quite as good as continuous material — it is why the guidance above is cautious. Two halves and two screws mean there is a small amount of assembly at your end that a one-piece standard does not ask for.
If you are comparing standards
Five questions worth asking of any hanging standard, ours included:
- Does it step over the track, or sit on top of it? Look at the part from the side. If the back is flat, the whole column stands off the wall by the thickness of the track.
- If you cut it in half, is the bottom half still a standard? This is the fastest test of whether you are buying one usable part or two.
- Does it have screw holes? No holes means the track is not optional and the standard has exactly one load path.
- Can it be extended? Ask what happens when the run needs to be taller than the longest part they sell.
- Can the load be split across more than one track? A standard with one hook has one answer to this, permanently.
