The Case for Visible Hardware

Every cover plate is another part. On open shelving, showing the hardware is the minimal choice, not the raw one.

We should start by admitting we hide hardware when it is the right thing to do.

Our sister brand NoBox makes a wall mount for the HomePod whose defining feature is a magnetic cover that hides the fasteners and the cable-routing mess together, in one move, so there is nothing left on the wall to look at but the speaker. It is there because of what the speaker is: an object wrapped in a seamless acoustic mesh, with no seams, no fasteners and no visible interruption anywhere on it. Put one screw head next to that and the screw head becomes the whole object. The mount was drawn to disappear into the values of the thing it holds.

So this is not a principle we hold. It is a judgment, made per product, and it turns entirely on what the thing is for and what it will sit next to.

Open shelving comes out the other way, and it is worth being precise about why.

1. The contents are unconcealed, so the system should be too

An open shelving system displays your possessions without cover, edit or apology. Books with cracked spines, a rice cooker, the good ceramics and the ugly useful ones, all of it out in the room at eye level.

A system that puts your things on display while carefully hiding its own workings is being coy about the one object in the arrangement it had complete control over. It is asking for a standard of concealment from itself that it does not offer you, and it looks like exactly that once you notice it — a piece of furniture with something to be discreet about, surrounded by your entire life on open shelves.

The alternative is to make the system philosophically continuous with what it holds. Nothing on it is covered, so nothing in it is covered. That coherence is worth more in a room than any individual detail, because it is the thing you register before you have looked at anything closely.

2. Every cover is another part

Here is the argument that almost never gets made, and it is the practical one.

Concealment is additive. A hidden fixing needs a cap, a cover plate, a trim piece or a shroud. That is one more part to manufacture, one more to pack, one more to lose, one more surface to keep in the same colour, and one more tolerance stacked on top of the tolerances that were already there. It is also, invariably, the part that stops sitting flush after the third time you move a shelf.

And it makes repair worse. A covered fixing is a fixing you cannot inspect, cannot re-torque and cannot reach without disassembly — on a system explicitly designed to be taken apart and rearranged for decades.

So on an open system, showing the hardware is not the raw or unfinished choice. It is the choice with fewer parts in it, which is the same argument that took the front frame, the side gables and the plinth off the rest of the system. Concealment would have added mass back in the name of refinement.

This is also where the distinction from industrial-looking shelving lives. Applied ribs, decorative swages and a bracket stamped with its own load rating are costume — they add material in order to look like mechanism. Showing the mechanism that is genuinely there is the opposite move, and the two get confused constantly. What we are against, in both directions, is a part that is not telling the truth about itself.

3. The tradition — and the half of it that is hard

There is a long line of building behind this. The high-tech architects made revealed structure and revealed services the entire subject: the Centre Pompidou by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, with its ducts, lifts and structure hung on the outside; Lloyd's of London; Norman Foster's HSBC building in Hong Kong, holding its structural masts up in public; the Hopkins House in Hampstead, the steel-and-glass house Michael and Patty Hopkins built for themselves in 1976 and then lived in.

But the reason that work is good is not that it revealed hardware. It is that the hardware was worth revealing. Anyone can leave a bracket showing. Those buildings committed to something much more expensive: every exposed connection, every bolt, every joint had to be resolved to the standard of a finished surface, because it was the finished surface. Take the covers off an ordinary building and you get a mess. Take them off one of those and you get the point.

That is the commitment, and it is the one we tried to take on. Exposure is not a style you apply at the end. It is a decision made at the start that removes every place you could have hidden a compromise.

4. What is actually on show, and why each of them is there

The folds. The shelf and the cantilever are folded sheet, and the folds are visible as folds — you can read how the flat piece became a three-dimensional one. That is the part's whole structural story told without a diagram.

The reliefs at the bends. Where a fold meets another fold, sheet metal needs a small relief cut or it tears and puckers. Most products treat these as a manufacturing embarrassment to be tucked out of sight. They are drawn here — sized, positioned and made consistent, so they read as a detail rather than as damage.

The screw holes. The Hangtrack fixes to the wall with one row of screws through a visible line of holes on a 1 in pitch, and the heads stay in view. We could have covered that row. It would have meant a trim strip the full length of every wall, in exchange for hiding the single most reassuring thing about the installation.

The cut edges. Every profile edge is a cut edge, and on a coated white part there is nowhere for a ragged one to hide. They get looked at because they are the outline of every part you see.

The coating at the edges. Powder behaves in a specific way at a corner — it softens the arris slightly and pools a little where two surfaces meet. On a part designed to be examined this is not a defect to be fought; it is a characteristic of the finish, and the radii were drawn knowing it would happen.

The hooks. The cantilever's engagement with the standard is part of the finished object rather than something to be masked once loaded. It is the joint that carries everything, so it is the joint most worth being able to see.

5. Function, feel and fit — separated, then put back together

The way to get this wrong is to do it all at once. Judge a part on how it looks while you are still deciding what it has to carry and you will get a shape that satisfies neither.

So the parts were worked in three separate passes. Function — what it must hold and how it must move. Feel — what happens in the hand as it seats, slides and locks. Fit — proportion, the width of a reveal, whether one shape looks correct beside the next. Each optimised on its own terms, then recombined and argued with until the combination held.

In a design this minimal, that is very nearly the entire job. There is no ornament to arbitrate between the parts, no moulding to cover a junction that did not resolve. Everything is proportion and tectonics — which is just the old word for the way a thing is put together being the way it looks.

It took a large number of physical prototypes, and a great many of them went straight in the bin. Not because they failed structurally — most of them worked. They went in the bin because a reveal was two millimetres wrong, or a fold radius made a part look heavier than it was. Why a printed prototype answers questions a screen cannot is something we have written about separately; what the discards measure is the specific cost of getting proportion right on parts that have nowhere to hide.

It was difficult and it was genuinely enjoyable, and we would rather say that than pretend it was a process. Desh Home shelving is an argument that the hardware in your room can be worth looking at.

What this costs

There is no margin for a bad tolerance. A visible joint has to be right every single time. A covered one only has to work. We have removed our own safety net, and on a bad part that shows immediately.

Every mark is on show. Exposed white parts collect scuffs and fingerprints and offer them straight back to you — the finish hides nothing, on purpose, which is the same trade in a different place.

Some people want no visible fixings at all. That is a completely legitimate preference and we do not serve it. If the sight of a screw head in a row of screw heads will bother you in five years, it will bother you, and no argument in this post will fix that.

And the discards were expensive. The prototypes that went in the bin are in the price of the parts. That is the honest accounting of a detail-led design, and it is why this is not a $6 slotted strip.

What to look at on any shelving that shows its hardware

  1. Is there a cover plate anywhere? Ask what is underneath it and why it needed covering. Sometimes the answer is good. Often it is a joint that did not resolve.
  2. Are the relief cuts drawn or accidental? Look where two folds meet. Consistent, deliberate reliefs mean somebody detailed the part. Ragged ones mean the flat pattern was left to the machine.
  3. Do the fixings land in a pattern? A visible row of screws on an even pitch reads as intent. Fixings wherever they happened to be needed read as an afterthought, and no amount of finish rescues them.
  4. How does the coating handle an edge? Edges are where a cheap coating goes thin and a good one goes soft. It is the fastest tell there is.
  5. Would the bare hardware look right on its own? Picture the wall with the shelves off it, just the track and the standards. If that image is embarrassing, the design was counting on being covered up.
