There is more of a bookcase, but it does not do any more. Here is the arithmetic.
A bookcase occupies the floor and the wall at the same time, and only pays you for one of them.
That sentence is the whole post, but it sounds like a slogan until you put numbers under it. So here are the numbers, and then the part that surprises most people, which is what the reclaimed floor turns out to be good for.
1. The arithmetic, on a wall you can picture
Take a twelve-foot wall — the long wall of an ordinary living room or a decent bedroom.
Fill it with bookcases. A common bookcase is about 12 in deep. Four cases at 36 in wide fill the wall. Floor consumed:
12 ft of run × 1 ft of depth = 12 square feet.
Fill it with wall-hung shelving instead. Same run, same 12 in depth, same books:
0 square feet.
Twelve square feet is not an abstraction. It is a 3 ft × 4 ft patch of your home — an armchair and a side table, or a desk with a chair pulled out, or the entire footprint of a small upright piano. In a 700 sq ft apartment it is a bit under 2% of everything you rent or own.
If you want the number in money, the arithmetic is yours to run: depth in feet × run in feet × your cost per square foot. At a rate of, say, $3 per square foot per month — not an unusual figure in a dense city, though you should use your own — those 12 square feet cost about $36 a month. Whether that changes your mind is a separate question from whether it is true, and we are not going to pretend to do your budget for you.
2. The depth of a bookcase is partly ballast, not storage
Here is a thing worth noticing about that 12 in.
A hardcover novel is about 6.5 in deep. Even large-format art and photography books mostly land between 11 and 12 in, and there are not many of those. So a 12 in case is deeper than the great majority of what will ever go in it.
Part of that depth is not there for your books. It is there so the object does not fall over. A tall, narrow, freestanding thing loaded with mass at the top needs a base wide enough to resist tipping, and depth is where it gets it.
Wall-hung shelving has no tipping moment to resist — the wall is doing that — so depth can be set by the contents instead of by stability. That is why an 8 in shelf is a real option rather than a compromise. The same books, on a third less floor projection, and the wall behind it never notices.
Which depth suits which row is its own question. The point here is only that one of these two objects gets to choose freely and the other does not.
3. The strap is already in the carton
Now the part that undoes the usual objection before it is made.
Most flat-pack bookcases arrive with an anti-tip strap in the hardware bag and instructions telling you to screw it to the wall. That is not a legal requirement for shelving — the US furniture stability law covers dressers and clothing storage, not bookcases — but it is close to universal practice, and it is what safety authorities recommend for anything tall enough to fall on someone.
So the wall was always going to be drilled. The bookcase has already conceded that it cannot stand up on its own in a house with children, or a cat, or an earthquake, or a person who leans on things.
At which point the trade is very plain. Both objects are fixed to your wall. Only one of them also charges you twelve square feet of floor for the privilege.
4. What the floor is actually for
The reclaimed square footage is worth something on its own. What it is worth more of is the thing you can now put there, because a shelf wall does not have to start at the floor.
Start it six inches up and the floor underneath stays usable and stays visible — shoes, a robot vacuum that can actually get under it, a rug that runs unbroken to the skirting.
Start it at three feet and the whole zone below becomes furniture-shaped. A console. A desk. A low chest. A small electronic piano. The head of a bed, with the shelving beginning above the headboard.
And the part almost nobody realises is possible: you can decide this after installation, and change it later. Take the lower shelves off, slide the desk or the bed or the piano against the standards, put those shelves back in above it. The standards stay where they are. Nothing gets re-drilled. The wall reorganises itself around a piece of furniture that did not exist when you planned it.
A bookcase cannot do any part of that. The bottom shelf is where the bottom shelf is, permanently, and the floor in front of it is spoken for.
(This is the measured version of an argument we have made visually elsewhere — that a floor you can see all of makes a room read as its full size. Same fact, two different things to care about.)
5. And then you have to get it into the building
Everything above assumes the bookcase is already in the room. Getting it there is its own tax, and it comes in two flavours, both bad.
Assembled, it is one large rigid object. A 36 in wide, six-foot case has to clear your front door, then the turn at the bottom of the stairs, then the turn at the top, then the doorway of the room it is going in — and it is the turns that fail, not the doors. This is how people end up hiring movers for a bookcase, taking a window out, or hauling furniture over a balcony.
Flat-packed, it is a stack of heavy boxes and an afternoon. Cam locks, dowels, a back panel of thin board and a couple of dozen fasteners, assembled on the floor and then walked upright into position — which is the point at which you discover whether the ceiling is high enough to tilt it up.
Our alternative is a set of parcels, a row of screws, and parts whose longest dimension is 42.5 in because we ship the standard in two halves specifically so it goes round the turn at the top of your stairs.
Which is the whole comparison in one line: there is more of a bookcase, but it does not do any more.
What this costs
Sometimes not touching the wall is the requirement. A lease that genuinely forbids it, a wall that cannot take load, a listed building, a landlord you would rather not test. Freestanding shelving occupies the floor and not the wall, and if the wall is unavailable that is not a weakness, it is the entire specification. Buy the bookcase.
A bookcase moves as an object. It goes in a van and comes out as itself. Ours comes off the wall in pieces and leaves one row of filled holes behind — which is a smaller repair than most people expect, but it is not zero.
A case has sides. Books stop at the end of a bookcase. On an open run they can walk off the end, and the tall cantilever is the answer we offer rather than a gable you never have to think about.
And a shelf wall cannot divide a room. Freestanding shelving can stand in the middle of a floor and make two spaces out of one. Ours needs a wall and always will. If what you want is a room divider, none of the arithmetic above applies to you.
What to work out before you decide
- Do the multiplication. Depth in feet × run in feet. That is the floor you are about to commit, and it is worth seeing as a number before you see it as furniture.
- How deep do your actual books need? Measure the deepest twenty. If the answer is 8 in, a 12 in case is spending four inches of your floor on tip resistance.
- Is there a strap in the box? If the case has to be anchored anyway, the wall is already in the deal and only the floor is negotiable.
- What would you put under it? A desk, a bed, a piano, or nothing. The answer decides your start height, and you can change your mind later — but only on a system whose lower shelves come out.
- Map the route in. Front door, stairs, the turn at the top, the room door. Measure the tightest turn, not the widest door. That is the dimension that decides whether an assembled case can ever reach the room you bought it for.
