One row of screws into the studs, and nothing after it is fastened to the wall. What to do, in order.
Installing track shelving is three steps: fasten the Hangtrack horizontally into the studs, hook the Standards onto it, then drop the shelves in at whatever heights you want. Only the first step touches the wall. A drill and a level, and the whole thing is one row of screws.

Scope. This covers drywall over wood studs, which is most American walls. Masonry, concrete and plaster-and-lath each change the fixing and nothing else — the steps below stay the same.
Before you start
Tools: a drill and a level. That is the whole list. Everything after the Hangtrack is hookwork.
A second person, briefly. Holding a levelled track against a wall while you drive the first screw is the only part of this that is awkward alone.
Know where your studs are before you commit to a height, and mark them. You are not working around them — the 1 in hole pitch means a hole lands on every stud whatever the spacing — but you do want to know how many you are catching.
Step 1 — Install the Hangtrack
This is the only step that puts anything into the wall, and the only one that has to be right.
Choose the height. The top of the Hangtrack sets the top of the system. A full 85 in Standard hangs below it, so a track at eye level gives you a full column down to baseboard height; a track higher up gives you a shorter column and more clear wall beneath. Nothing about this decision is constrained by the framing.
Level it, then mark through the holes. Mark the holes that land on studs. Because the track is drilled every inch, you will always have one within half an inch of a stud centre, and a stud is an inch and a half wide.
Drill and drive. Every screw that matters goes into a stud. Where a drywall anchor earns its place is out at the end of a run, a foot or more past the last stud: there it carries real load and keeps the track from rotating, and a track should never hang on a single fastener anyway. An anchor sitting between two stud screws is the other case — the track is stiff enough that there is very little deflection there for it to work against, so it is doing less than it looks.
The heads sit flush. The holes are countersunk, and the fasteners are sized to fill them: a flathead seats into the countersink and fills the hole completely. The two parts were drawn for each other, which is why a driven screw disappears into the track instead of sitting on top of it.
Where the track ends is your decision, not the framing's. A stiff track lets you finish the run where you want the shelving to finish, rather than where the last convenient stud happens to be. That argument, and the gauge behind it, is the Hangtrack post.
Step 2 — Hook on the Standards
No fasteners. The Standards hook over the Hangtrack and lock under load — the weight of the system is what holds them.
One Standard at each shelf edge. Two for your first bay. Every bay after that needs one more, because adjacent bays share the standard between them.
Slide them along the track to position. They are not fixed to anything, so this is the moment to get spacing right, and it stays adjustable afterwards.
Set the set screws at the ends. Each Hangtrack has one at each end. It stops the end Standard sliding off and sets it flush with the end of the track, so the system finishes exactly where the track does. If you are butting two Hangtracks together for a longer run, the set screw at that join comes out.
They sit flat. The Standard is stepped where it crosses the track, so it lies flush to the wall rather than standing proud of it. There is nothing to do here — it is just the reason there is no gap.
Step 3 — Place the shelves
Drop the brackets into the slots, one on each Standard at the height you want, then set the shelf on top. Each bracket takes its own slot; nothing shares an opening. That is the double-slot arrangement, and at this step it means you are never fighting one part for space with another.
About 15 in apart is the default that works. It is a good general book height, and it happens to be a whole number of slots, so it is a spacing the part actually gives you rather than one you approximate. Go tighter for paperbacks, wider for anything upright.
Deep shelves low. A 16 in shelf holds more and holds it further out. Put the deep ones where the heavy things were going anyway.
No tools, and no commitment. Height changes are a lift and a re-hook. This is the step you are allowed to get wrong.
Then stand back
One detail worth looking for once the shelves are loaded, because it was drawn deliberately and it is easy to miss.
The row of holes along the Hangtrack sits as close to the folded flange as it could be put. Mounted high and seen from below — standing, or sitting on furniture — the flange covers the row, and the hole line largely disappears. A track with its holes further from the fold stays visible from every angle in the room. Ours is meant to be visible only when you are looking straight at it.
Where this goes wrong
Levelling to the ceiling. Ceilings are not level and neither are floors. Level the track to a level, and let the discrepancy live where nobody reads it.
Treating the anchors as structure. Between-stud anchors are a secondary on this system, not the primary load path. If a bay is carrying real weight, it is carrying it into the studs.
Ordering before measuring the wall. Bay widths add along the track, and real walls have doors, windows and furniture in the way. Measure the clear width first.
Assuming the framing is regular. It usually is not, especially near corners and openings. It does not matter here — but it matters a great deal if you were planning to put fixed brackets up instead.
Before you drill
- Do you know where the studs are, and how many the track will catch?
- Is the bay width settled? The track length is the bay width; changing it later means moving standards and re-buying shelves.
- Is the height right for the column you want below it? The track sets the top of everything.
- Is anything else going on that wall? Outlets, vents and window trim are easier to plan around than to discover.
- Do you have a level, and someone to hold one end?
