Single-Slot vs Double-Slot Standards: What You Trade

The trade is aesthetics on the backplane for aesthetics on the front edge. Why we took it, and what it costs on an empty wall.

A single-slot standard has one column of slots. A double-slot standard has two columns of slots. Desh– standards are double-slot.

Why we chose double-slot, and it is mostly a design decision

Structurally, we could have reached an adequate result either way. Three things decided it, and none of them is load.

The bracket-to-shelf detail depends on a one-sided fold. The cantilever meets the shelf in a deliberately understated way, and that connection is drawn around a fold on one side, the inside, of the cantilever. A single-slot layout would have forced the equivalent detail onto both sides, and a two-sided fold that looked equally good would have been very difficult to execute.

One component per slot. In a single-slot system, two shelves meeting at the same standard — one arriving from the left, one from the right — have to share one opening, which means a third bracket type, in addition to the existing left and right brackets, exists purely to collect both. With two columns, each side gets its own slot and its own bracket. Fewer parts in the catalog. Greater flexibility. Lower system cost.

Elfa solves the same problem the other way. Their bracket spans two horizontally adjacent slots — one in each vertical run — so a single wider bracket can carry either the end of one shelf or the abutting ends of two. The shelf then needs a wire clip to stop it sliding off. What is observable is that their wire shelving and their solid shelving use very similar brackets. Our guess — and it is only a guess, since we have no real view of how the design evolved — is that the solid shelf inherited a bracket drawn for wire. Whatever the history, it is not where you would end up starting from a solid shelf: a shared bracket wide enough for two shelf ends, and a clip to keep them on it.

Shared slots have no reveal. Two parts jammed into one opening have no gap between them, and nothing sets the spacing except how they happen to sit. Two columns give every junction a defined gap. That reveal is the difference between a wall that looks assembled and one that looks crowded.

The third point is also the one with a future in it. A shelving system that stays useful eventually carries things that are not shelves, and the moment two of them meet at the same standard, a shared opening becomes a real problem rather than a tidy one.

What this costs

Two rows of slots up every standard instead of one. That is more visual information on the wall, and a single column is unquestionably the tidier part in isolation.

We think it is the right trade, for a reason that only holds once the system is in use. The standard is most exposed on an empty wall — and an empty wall is the state the shelving spends the least time in. Loaded, the contents cover most of the standard's length. With shelves reasonably full and neighbours close above and below, the sight lines that would show you a long clean run of standard barely exist, even at eye level.

So the cost is real, and it is paid almost entirely in the photograph rather than in the room.

If you are comparing standards

  1. How many columns of slots? One or two. That is the single-slot / double-slot distinction, and everything else follows from it.
  2. How many bracket types does the system need? A system requiring a special bracket wherever two shelves meet is less flexible when reconfigured.
  3. Where do two adjacent parts meet? Look for the reveal and see if you like how it looks.
