Small-Wall Shelving: Over the Bath, Under the Window

Most shelving is drawn for the big wall. The small wall is where people actually run out of room.

Every home has more small walls than large ones, and almost no shelving is designed for them. The strip over the bath. The wall under a window. The four feet between a door frame and the corner. The alcove beside a chimney breast. The stretch of hallway that is only wall because it is not door.

These are the walls where storage is genuinely missing, and the usual answers are bad in a specific way: a floating shelf that carries nothing, a stack of two brackets that never looks intentional, or a full-height system cut down until it looks like a full-height system that went wrong.

A small wall is not a scaled-down large wall. It is a different problem, and most of it is solved by one decision that was made for an unrelated reason.

1. What makes a wall small

Two dimensions, and the second one is the one people get wrong.

Narrow is easy to see: less than about four feet of clear width, usually because something interrupts it — a door casing, a window reveal, a corner, a boxed-in soil pipe.

Short is the harder one. A wall can be nine feet tall and still be a small wall, because the usable band is short: the strip between the top of a bath and the ceiling, the band between a worktop and the underside of a cabinet, the three or four feet under a window. What limits the shelving is not the height of the room, it is the height of the gap.

That combination — narrow and short — is where a conventional shelving system stops making sense. You are buying full-height columns and using a third of them, and the parts you are not using are still on your wall, visible above the top shelf, announcing that the wall was too small.

2. A small wall costs one box, and that was an accident

Here is the part that matters at the point of purchase.

A Desh Home Shelf Standard is 85 in and ships as two 42.5 in halves, neither of which is an offcut. Both halves carry their own hook. Both hang on their own.

A bay of shelving needs two columns. So on a small wall, one $49 box is the whole structure — two 42.5 in columns, one on each side of the bay, from a single purchase. On a full-height wall you buy two boxes and couple them into two 85 in columns.

That is worth saying plainly because it inverts the usual economics: the short installation is not the expensive-per-inch one. In most systems it is, because you buy the column length the manufacturer sells and use what you need. Here the short version is the one that uses the whole box.

The reason it works out that way is freight, not generosity. The halves exist because an 85 in part is oversized to every carrier that touches it and a 42.5 in part is a parcel. Making both halves identical — so neither one is scrap — is what turned a shipping decision into two working columns. The small-wall case is downstream of a decision made about cardboard.

3. Three shelves in 42.5 inches, and the top one is a cap

A 42.5 in column is almost exactly right for three shelves, and the arithmetic is clean because the slot pitch is 1.25 in: 42.5 in is 34 slot positions, and there are no fractions anywhere in the system.

  • 12 slots is 15 in of clear space — generous, the spacing for tall bottles, boxed things, a run of books stood upright.
  • 10 slots is 12.5 in — the usual working spacing for most of what people actually shelve.
  • 8 slots is 10 in — tight, and the right answer over a bath where headroom above the shelf is not the constraint.

Three shelves at 15 in apart occupy 30 in of a 42.5 in column. Four at 12.5 in occupy 37.5 in. Both fit. The column is not the limit on a small wall, which is not something you can say about most short shelving.

Now the detail that decides whether it looks finished. Use the slender cantilever and nothing projects above the shelf surface and nothing hangs below it. The consequence on a small wall is worth more than it is on a big one: the top shelf can be left empty.

On most bracket systems an empty top shelf reads as unfinished, because the structure carries on past it — two uprights standing proud with nothing between them, and the eye reads the missing shelf rather than the empty one. Here, a flat plank with nothing above it terminates the run. It becomes a cap: a horizontal line at the top of the installation, doing the job a cornice does, and it is a perfectly good place to put nothing at all.

So the three-shelf small wall is really two shelves and a lid, and it is a better-looking object than two shelves would have been.

If you want the opposite — a shelf that stops things travelling off the end — the tall cantilever is deliberately proud of the surface and does that instead. On a small wall, pick one and be consistent, because at this size every part is in the same glance.

4. Under a window, the bottom shelf becomes the sill

Turn the same column upside down, conceptually, and the useful shelf is the low one.

A window sill is the one horizontal surface in most rooms that nobody planned to use. It is usually too shallow to hold anything, and whatever is on it is there because it fits, not because it belongs there.

Set the lowest shelf at or just under sill height and you have replaced a ledge with a surface. An 8 in shelf is roughly three times the depth of a typical sill, it runs the full width of the bay rather than the width of the opening, and it is at the height where a surface is useful for putting things down rather than storing them — plants, a radio, the things that migrate to a sill anyway and then fall behind the radiator.

Four things to check before you commit to that:

  • Which way the window opens. A casement that swings in will hit a shelf at sill height. A sash or an out-swinging casement will not.
  • What is under the window. A radiator or a floor vent below a shelf is a heat problem for whatever you put on it, and putting a deep shelf directly over a radiator changes how the room heats.
  • The sill's own depth. A shelf deeper than the sill will sit proud of it, which is fine and reads as deliberate. A shelf shallower than the sill looks like a mistake.
  • The light. A shelf under a window costs you nothing. A shelf across a window costs you the window. This is the one place on a small wall where the temptation to keep going upward should be resisted.

5. Over a bath, honestly

The strip above a bath is the most requested small wall in the house and the one with the real caveat, so here it is without the marketing.

The system is powder-coated steel, and powder coat is a coating. Intact, it does not care about a humid room. Chipped, there is carbon steel underneath, and a bathroom is the room where that shows up first and worst. That is not a special weakness of ours — it is true of every coated steel product sold for this — but it changes the advice: do not install a part whose coating was damaged in transit or on the way up the stairs above a bath. Put that one in the garage and use a sound one where it is wet.

Depth is a head-height decision, not a storage decision. Over a bath you are leaning over the shelf, standing up under it, or both. 8 in is the depth that works. The 12 in and 16 in shelves are the wrong parts for this wall no matter how much you want the storage.

The wall behind a bath is frequently not the wall you think it is. Tile over cement board, tile over plaster, a boxed-in duct, or a panel with a cavity behind it. Where there is framing, fix into framing. Where there is tile in front of it, the fastener and the drilling method are questions for the fastener manufacturer, who publishes values by wall type — we can tell you what our steel does, because we made it and loaded it, and we cannot tell you what your wall does.

And a wet room is where the small run wins anyway. Three shelves over a bath is the case for buying one box of standards and three 24 in shelves, not a case for a system.

What this costs

On a small wall, the track is the part to think hardest about. The Hangtrack buys you the ability to slide columns anywhere along a wall and to land the fixings wherever the framing actually is. On a 24 in bay there is almost nowhere to slide to, and the Standard has screw holes and can go straight to the wall — so on a short, sound, flat wall where the studs are where you want the columns, skipping the track is fewer parts and $35 less. On plaster, on an old wall, or where you expect to move things, the track still earns it. Small walls are the one case where the honest answer is genuinely sometimes "no track."

The shelves are the cost, not the structure. A three-shelf 24 in wall is $49 of column and $254.97 of shelf. Every conversation about what a small wall costs is really a conversation about how many horizontal surfaces you want, and that is the right way round.

A short column has less to adjust into. The whole system moves on a 1.25 in pitch without tools, but 34 slot positions is 34, and on a small wall the shelves are near each other by definition. There is less room to be wrong in, which cuts both ways.

Two small walls are not cheaper than one big wall. Each one needs its own track or its own screws, and the shelves do not get cheaper for being short — a 24 in shelf is $84.99 against $95.99 for a 36 in. If you have a choice between one 36 in bay and two 24 in bays, the single bay is less money and less drilling.

Before you shelve a small wall

  1. Measure the gap, not the wall. The number that matters is the clear band between the fixed things — bath rim to ceiling, worktop to cabinet, sill to floor. That is your column height, and if it is under about 42 in you are in one-box territory.
  2. Decide the top shelf's job first. Cap or barrier. A flat empty plank finishes the run; a tall cantilever stops things falling off it. Choosing after installation means moving a shelf, which is easy — but choosing before means buying the right cantilever once.
  3. Work in slots, not inches. 8, 10 and 12 slots are 10 in, 12.5 in and 15 in. Planning in slot counts stops the arithmetic from landing between positions.
  4. Pick 8 in depth by default on a small wall. Small walls are usually narrow because something is in the way, and a deep shelf on a narrow wall is a thing to walk into. Depth is available later; the wall is not getting wider.
  5. Ask whether it wants a track at all. This is the only tier of installation where the answer is sometimes no, and it is worth $35 and a row of holes to ask it properly.
