New to Desh? Start here. A working bay needs a hangtrack, two shelving standards, and shelves. The Starter Kit has all of them in one order, sized to fit together.
Steel shelving standards (shelf standards) that hook onto a wall hangtrack — no screws into the shelf. One row of screws goes into the Hangtrack. After that, nothing is fastened to the wall again: standards hook on and lock under load, brackets locate on the standards, and the whole layout moves.
- What it is: an 85" steel shelf standard for track-and-standard wall shelving.
- Mounting: hooks onto a Hangtrack — no wall fasteners on the standard itself.
- Material: steel, powder-coated.
- Fits: Desh hangtracks and shelves — and Desh shelf cantilevers fit Elfa standards.
- Height: 85" total, shipped as two usable 42.5" halves.
- Use for: tall wall shelving, shorter runs above furniture, and multi-bay layouts.
- System parts: pair with Hangtracks and Shelves.
How shelving standards work
The shelf standard is the vertical rail that hooks onto your hangtrack and carries your shelves. Standards sit wherever a shelf edge falls — one at each edge of a bay, and one shared standard between two adjacent shelves.
Because standards are not screwed to the wall, they can sit anywhere along the hangtrack. Mix 24" and 36" shelves in the same run by adding a standard wherever a new shelf edge needs support.
Four differences worth knowing
Hanging standards are not new. These are the details that matter once you plan a real wall.
- It lies flush to the wall. The standard is stepped where it crosses the hangtrack, so the rail sits inside the profile and the standard stays flat against the wall.
- Two usable standards in one box. The 85" standard ships as two 42.5" halves; either half works alone for a short run over a bath, under a window, or above a desk.
- You can hang from two tracks, not one. The lower half can take its own hangtrack, so a tall install splits the load instead of hanging everything from one top rail.
- The hangtrack is thicker, so the studs matter less. A heavier section means the fixing does not have to sit near the end of the track. More on the Hangtrack.
How it compares to other shelving standards
Track-and-standard shelving is sold at two levels, and both hang the same way. At one end it is closet and garage hardware — epoxy-coated steel and wire. At the other it is European design, where a single configured column can run past a thousand dollars.
Desh sits with the second on engineering and much nearer the first on price. Steel and powder coat. A hangtrack drilled at 1" spacing for American studs at 16", 24", or whatever the wall gives you. Folded-steel shelves that carry load to the edge. US shipping included, as a parcel rather than oversized freight.
If you already own Elfa
A Desh shelf cantilever fits an Elfa standard. Put one Desh shelf on the standards already on your wall and see it in your room before changing anything else.
That is deliberate. The parts that touch the wall are ours; the interface that has to work for years belongs to the whole category. A proprietary slot would force a full wall swap to try one shelf — the trap IKEA Algot owners hit when replacements no longer fit.

Height
Each standard is 85" tall and ships as two 42.5" halves in one box — short enough for parcel shipping.
- Full 85": taller installs and more shelf positions.
- A single 42.5" half: lower runs above a desk, dresser, or bed.
How many shelving standards do you need?
Start with two — one on each side of your first bay. Add one standard per extra bay. If rows do not line up vertically, add a standard wherever a new shelf edge is unsupported.
