The problem with an old plaster wall is not that it is weak. It is that it is not flat.
There are two separate questions about hanging shelves on plaster and lath, and almost everything written about it only answers the first one. The first is whether the wall will hold — a fastener question, and a reasonably well-understood one. The second is whether the shelving will look right once it is up, which is a geometry question, and on a hundred-year-old wall it is the one that actually decides the outcome.
Take them in that order.
1. There is structure behind it, and it is easy to find
Plaster and lath is a finish, not a structure. Thin wooden strips are nailed across the studs and the plaster is pushed through the gaps between them to key in behind. Which means the framing is still there, still doing its job, and usually still on something close to a regular spacing.
So the first answer is the ordinary one: find the studs and screw into them. The lath itself helps — it is nailed to every stud, and those nail lines are frequently detectable where nothing else is.
Where framing is not where you need it, hollow-wall anchors are what people use, and they work in the sense that people use them successfully every day. We would put two caveats on that rather than a recommendation. Anchors are sold with published capacities measured in gypsum board, and plaster over lath is not gypsum board — it is a brittle skin over wooden strips over a cavity, and its usual failure is the plaster cracking or the key breaking loose around the hole, not the anchor pulling out of anything. And anything genuinely load-bearing should be going into a stud regardless of what wall is in front of it.
And a track catches studs that a standard would have missed entirely. This is the part most people do not think through. Standards stand where the shelf edges fall — 24 or 36 in apart, because that is what the shelves are. Studs stand 16 in apart, because that is what the framing is. Those two spacings only coincide occasionally, so a standard screwed straight to the wall lands on solid timber more or less by accident, and the rest of the time it is fixed into plaster. A track runs across all of them and, drilled every inch, picks up every stud it crosses. On a wall whose finish is brittle and whose framing is the only thing worth fixing to, that is not a refinement. It is the difference between the load going into wood and the load going into a hundred-year-old skin.
It is also fewer holes, in the surface that repairs worst. A patch in lath and plaster is slow to do properly and shows under a raking light for a long time afterwards, so how many fixings go in, and where they sit, is a real consideration rather than a fussy one. The track takes one row of screws at one height. Standards screwed to the wall take a column of fixings down the full height of every standard — on a four-bay wall, five columns of holes at every height.
This is where the Hangtrack earns its keep before any of the design arguments start. It is drilled on a 1 in pitch, and it is twelve gauge, which is stiff enough that the fixings can go where the framing is rather than near the ends of the track. On a plaster wall that is the difference between putting every screw into sound structure and putting some of them into a hundred-year-old skin.
2. The wall is not flat, and this is what actually goes wrong
Now the part nobody warns you about.
Old plaster undulates. It was applied by hand in coats over an irregular substrate, it has been patched, it has moved with the building, and it is rarely flat to within anything you would call a tolerance. Run a long straightedge across it and you will find bows, dishes and proud patches over the studs.
Shelving that is screwed directly to a wall inherits the shape of that wall. Each standard sits against whatever the plaster is doing at that particular position: one lands on a proud stud line and stands slightly forward, the next sits in a dish and leans back a degree, and the shelves between them stop agreeing with each other. The shelf line is no longer straight, adjacent shelves in a run no longer meet cleanly, and the fronts of the shelves — which is where you look — sit at slightly different depths.
The standard remedy is shims. Pack behind each shelf until the front faces are visually aligned, check, re-check, add a shim, do it again on the next one. It works, and it is a second job that has nothing to do with shelving.
A track and double-hook cantilevers remove the problem instead of correcting it. The Hangtrack is fixed to the wall as one straight line — one row of screws, levelled once, and the fixings are into framing. Everything above and below it then hangs from the track rather than from the plaster. The standards hook onto it and the shelves lock into the standards, which forces them into alignment, so the geometry of the finished wall is set by parts that were made to fit each other, not by the surface behind them.
That is the argument for a hanging system on an old wall, and it is more important here than in a new build. The irregularity gets absorbed once, at the track and standard, and nothing downstream of it has to be corrected. No shims behind the standards, no packing behind the shelves, no second pass.
3. What a bowed wall still does
Being straight about the limit, because it exists.
Nothing makes shelving perfectly flat against a wall that is not flat. What changes is how much of it you ever see, and there are two mechanisms doing that work.
The first is that the track itself can be brought straight. Put a washer or two behind the screws that land in the hollows and the Hangtrack hangs as a straight line rather than as a copy of the wall. This is the one place packing is worth doing, because it is one part, at one height, done once — as opposed to packing behind every standard and then behind every shelf, which is the second afternoon this post exists to avoid. Keep it to a washer or two rather than a stack; you are correcting a wall, not standing the track off it.
The second is the double hook. Where the wall bows forward, the standards will still follow it forward — they hang plumb from the track but they sit against the plaster. What stops that reading as a defect is that the two hooks force the shelves into alignment with each other: adjacent shelf edges are held in line by the parts, so the wall's shape does not arrive at the joint between two shelves, which is where the eye would otherwise catch it.
That is the honest version of the claim. Not that Desh Home shelving is flat on a bent wall — nothing is — but that the correction happens at one line, and what is left over stays off the front edge, which is the surface the shelving is judged on.
What this costs
A track is a part you did not have to buy. Screwing standards straight to the wall is fewer components and less money, and on a flat, modern, sound wall with framing exactly where you want your columns, it is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. The track is worth its price on a wall that is none of those things.
Before you drill an old wall
- Find the framing first, and confirm it. The lath nails are the tell. Drill a small pilot before committing to a whole row.
- Straightedge the wall before you plan the layout. Knowing where the wall bows tells you where the gap behind the shelving will open, and sometimes it moves the run 6 in along.
- Level the track and then trust it. Every alignment decision on the wall is made in that one operation.
- Ask what the wall is worth to you. In an old apartment the plaster is frequently the nicest surface in the room. Fewer holes in one line is a different proposition from a grid of them.
- Tap for hollowness where you intend to fix. If it drums, fix somewhere else or fix the wall.
