A loft asks three things of shelving at once. They are independent problems, and only one of them is difficult.
Almost all domestic shelving is drawn for a room that is 8 ft tall, framed in timber, and interrupted every few feet by a door, a window or a corner. A loft is none of those things, which is why so much of it looks provisional in one: a bookcase that stops at 6 ft under a 14 ft ceiling, or a run of shelves that ends in the middle of a wall because that is where the product ended.
The three demands are worth separating, because a reader usually arrives with one of them and it is easy to believe they are the same problem. They are not. Height is a question about how many parts a column takes. The wall is a question about fasteners. Length is a question about modules. Nothing about a 14 ft ceiling changes what you do about brick.
1. The column does not have a top
The Shelf Standard is 85 in and ships as two 42.5 in halves with a coupler and two screws in the box. Couple the halves and you have a full-height column. Add another half and another coupler and the column keeps going — there is no mechanism in the part that says stop.
That is the whole answer to a 10, 12 or 14 ft ceiling, and it is worth being clear about what it is not: it is not a custom part, a special order, or a different product. It is the same $49 standard, bought again. A wall twice as tall costs twice as many standards and the same amount of thinking.
What a tall column actually needs is a second Hangtrack, not a longer standard. Because both halves of the standard are identical, both carry a hook — so a coupled column still has a hook partway down, doing nothing. Put a second Hangtrack where it lands and the wall now hangs from two rails at two heights. The shelves in the lower half load into framing near the lower half instead of travelling all the way up the column to the top track.
This also settles something that looks like a contradiction if you read our other posts on a tall wall. We say keep the heavy things near the fixings; we also say put the deep shelves low, where the heavy things were going anyway. On a single-track column those two are in tension. With a track at the lower hook they are not, because the fixings are now down there too.
We are not going to publish a maximum height, because it depends entirely on what you intend to put on it, and a number in a blog post cannot know that. The rule that does travel: once the column is coupled past full height, give it a second track. Under a ceiling that needs a third length of standard, we would want a third.
2. A hole every inch means something different on a solid wall
The Hangtrack is drilled on a 1 in pitch along its whole length. On a stud wall that pitch exists as a hedge — framing drifts, 16 in on centre is a target rather than a promise, and a hole every inch means every stud gets caught by a hole that is already there.
On brick, block or cast concrete the hedge is not needed, and the pitch turns into something better. There is no framing to find, so there is nothing to miss. Every inch of the track is a fixing position, and where the fixings go becomes a decision about load rather than a hunt for something to bite into. Solid walls are the easy case for this track, not the hard one.
Two things follow, and the second one is the one people get wrong.
You can put a fixing in every hole. We would not. Past a certain density, extra anchors stop adding meaningful capacity and start adding holes to a wall you presumably like. On masonry each one is also a hammer drill, an anchor and a few minutes, along the entire length of the run. Choose the spacing for the load, then stop.
The anchor is specified by your wall, not by us. We publish the gauge of our steel because we bought it and loaded it; we have no idea whether you are into sound brick, soft old brick, hollow block, or concrete with something in it. Solid-wall fasteners are sold with the manufacturer's published pull-out and shear values for each substrate, and that is the number to design to. Anyone telling you a single fastener that works on every hard wall is guessing on your behalf.
3. You can also skip the track
The standards are drilled too — at the standard and at the coupler — so on a hard wall you can screw them straight to the masonry and leave the track out of it entirely.
That is a real option and it is occasionally the right one: a permanent installation, a wall you are certain about, and one fewer part to buy. What you give up is everything the track was doing. You lose the ability to slide a column along the wall after the holes are drilled, you lose the flush end that lets a bay be exactly as wide as the bay, and you lose the reference line that keeps a row of standards aligned to each other rather than to the wall — which matters more than it sounds on old masonry, and is its own post.
The trade is adjustability against parts count. On a long or tall loft wall we would keep the track.
4. The run has no length
The Hangtrack comes in 24 in and 36 in lengths, and the natural question about a 20 ft loft wall is which one you buy. The answer is that tracks butt. Every track has a set screw at each end to stop the end standard sliding off; where one track meets another as part of a longer installation, that set screw comes out and the run continues.
So the length of a run is not a property of the product. A wall takes as many tracks as it takes, laid end to end at one height, and the shelving above and below them is bays of 24 in and 36 in sharing standards where they meet: four bays take five standards, ten bays take eleven.
We do not sell a 4 ft or 6 ft shelf, and on a long wall that turns out not to matter — the cantilevers are drawn so nothing projects above or below the shelf line at a join, so shelves placed end to end read as one line across the room rather than as a series of separate objects. If a 12 ft run of 36 in shelves looks like a 12 ft shelf, the longer shelf was buying an appearance you already had.
Left, right, up and down, then, the system scales by repeating itself. Which brings us to the direction where it does not.
What this costs
Front to back, there is exactly one shelf. Up, down and sideways are effectively unbounded; depth is a single shelf per level in each bay, chosen from 8, 12 or 16 in, with nothing behind it and nothing in front of it. Depths can change row by row and bay by bay, but no level is ever two shelves deep.
That limit lands hardest in exactly this room, because the thing a loft owner most often wants is a room divider — a tall double-sided structure standing free in the middle of a floor plate with no walls in it. This is not that, and no amount of couplers will make it that. It is a wall system, and it needs a wall.
Tall installations need a ladder, twice. Once to put it up and once every time you want what is on the top shelf. Height above about 7 ft is storage for things you have chosen not to reach — which is a genuinely good use of a loft wall, and is not the same as usable shelving.
Hard walls cost more to drill than they cost to hold. The holding is the easy part. A 20 ft run into concrete is an afternoon with a hammer drill and a vacuum, and the fasteners cost more than screws.
The coupler is a joint. No joint is quite as good as continuous material, which is the reason the guidance in section 1 is cautious rather than triumphant, and the reason the second track is a recommendation rather than a flourish.
And the wall is doing all of it. A freestanding bookcase asks nothing of the building. Everything described here ends up in brick, block, concrete or framing, and the quality of that substrate is the actual ceiling on what you can hang — not the steel, and not us.
If you are planning a loft wall
- Measure the height you will actually use, not the height of the room. Above roughly 7 ft you are designing storage. That may be exactly what you want on a 14 ft wall, but decide it deliberately.
- Count the standards before the shelves. n bays take n + 1 standards, and a tall wall takes two or three lengths of standard per column. The column count, not the shelf count, is what a tall loft wall changes.
- Decide where the second track goes before you drill the first. It lands where the lower hook lands. That is a dimension worth having on paper rather than discovering on a ladder.
- Identify the substrate for certain. Brick, block, poured concrete and plaster over any of them all take different anchors. If a previous owner has furred and boarded the wall, you are back to framing and a different problem.
- Ask what the wall is for in five years. The reason to keep the Hangtrack on a hard wall is that everything above it can be re-drawn without drilling masonry a second time.
