The question is not whether your framing is irregular. It is whether your shelving cares.
Open a wall in an old building and the framing is a record of everything that has happened to it. Sixteen inches on centre near the middle of a wall, something narrower beside a door, a doubled stud where a wall was moved, 24 in on centre because that is how it was built, and a stretch near a corner that follows no rule at all. Add a century of renovations and the spacing is best described as a distribution.
Every wall-hung shelving system has to deal with this, and there are only two places to deal with it: at the wall, or at the shelving.
1. Two ways to lose
If the shelving screws to the wall, the framing designs your layout. Every column has to land on a stud, so the available bay widths are whatever the studs give you — 16 in, 32 in, 48 in if the framing is regular, and something arbitrary where it is not. You are not choosing where the shelving goes; you are finding out where it is allowed to go, and then living with a wall whose proportions were set by whoever framed the house.
If the shelving is hung from a rail, the rail has to reach the framing. This is where thin track gets into trouble, because a flexible rail has to be fixed near its own ends or it peels off the wall under load — so the track length ends up dictated by the stud positions, which puts you back in the first problem by a longer route.
The Desh Home answer to both is the same part, and it is twelve gauge with a hole every inch — stiff enough that the fixings can go wherever the framing is rather than near the ends of the track, and drilled finely enough that every stud is caught by a hole that already exists. 2. The track absorbs the irregularity, once
Here is the useful way to think about it, and it comes from somewhere unexpected.
Toyota's production system deals with uneven demand by absorbing it at the earliest possible point. The plant takes the lumpy, irregular pull of the market and levels it there, so what leaves for the supplier base is a smooth, regular requirement. The unevenness is real and it does not go away — it is dealt with once, at the front, so that nothing downstream has to solve it again. Everything after that point can be built to a plan instead of to a surprise. (It is Neil's day job, and it has a habit of showing up in the product.)
The Hangtrack does that to a house. The wall's irregularity is absorbed at the track — one row of fixings, placed wherever the framing actually is, however irregular that turns out to be. Everything above and below the track then works to the parts, not to the building: standards hang wherever a shelf edge falls, shelves lock into standards on a 1.25 in pitch, bays are 24 in and 36 in.
So the framing is a problem for one operation, and after that it is not a problem at all. You solve the wall once.
The practical consequence is the one to take away: your bay widths stop being a function of your studs. A 36 in bay is 36 in on 16 in centres, on 24 in centres, and on a wall where a previous owner did something inexplicable near the window. The n + 1 arithmetic for a run of bays works on any wall in any building, and the answer never changes because of what is behind the drywall.
3. Find the framing anyway
None of that removes the one job you do have, which is knowing where the studs are before you put the track up.
Fixings go into framing wherever framing exists. That is not a formality — the studs are the only part of a stud wall qualified to carry a loaded shelf, and the whole argument for a thick track is that it hands the load back to them instead of to whatever is between them.
Between studs, a hollow-wall anchor does no harm and, behind a stiff track, very little work. What we would not tell you is that a row of anchors is a substitute for framing. It is a supplement to it.
Where the framing genuinely cannot be reached — steel framing, a furred-out wall over masonry, services in the way — the fastener becomes a question for its manufacturer, who publishes values for each wall type. That is the number to work to. We can tell you what our steel does, because we made it and loaded it. We cannot tell you what your wall does.
What this costs
One careful operation instead of none. The track has to be found, levelled and fixed properly, because everything on the wall inherits that line. It is the only step of the installation worth slowing down for, and it is the step where a second pair of hands helps.
A track is a part you did not have to buy. On a flat, sound, regularly framed wall where you want your columns exactly 16 or 32 in apart, screwing standards straight into studs is fewer parts and less money. The track earns its price on the walls that are not that, which in older housing stock is most of them.
You still have to find the studs. Nothing here removes that job; it removes the requirement that your layout agree with the answer.
And an irregular wall is still irregular. The framing stops governing your bay widths. It does not stop the wall being out of plumb or out of plane — that is a different property of old walls and it is dealt with, as it happens, by the same part.
Before you plan a layout on an old wall
- Map the framing across the whole run first, not just at the ends. The surprises live near corners, doors and anything that has been renovated.
- Draw the bays you want, then check the track. With a 1 in pitch the question is only whether each track length catches the studs under it — not whether your layout agrees with the framing.
- 24 in on centre is not a fault. It is common, it is code-legal in plenty of construction, and it is exactly the spacing that defeats systems drilled at 2 in or 4 in intervals.
- Treat anchors as a supplement. If a plan depends on anchors carrying the shelving, the plan needs a different fixing, not more anchors.
- Put the track up once. The point of absorbing the wall at one line is that you never have to negotiate with the framing again — including in four years when the layout changes.
